The Furniture Industry is Invited to Participate
The American Home Furnishings Alliance (AHFA) announces the first annual Furniture Safety Week will be October 7-11, 2024. This initiative is designed to engage all segments of the home furnishings industry in public conversation about home safety and potential hazards that involve residential furniture.
Common hazards include:
- Furniture with drawers, doors, or shelves that can tip over if a child climbs or plays on it;
- Reclining furniture, especially units with a motorized recline function, that can entrap a child on or under the furniture when the footrest is closed; and,
- Bunk beds – or any bed – used as a springboard for play.
Furniture Safety Week will improve consumer awareness of these and other potential hazards and how to help prevent them. In addition, communications during Furniture Safety Week will spotlight existing product safety standards and advise consumers how to ensure furniture that they buy or already own meets current standards.
Industry Participants will include:
- Manufacturers & Importers
- Retailers & Retail Buying Groups
- E-commerce platforms
- Interior Designers
- Furniture Industry Trade Associations
How Industry Participants can help:
Participants will amplify Furniture Safety Week messages by:
- posting our social media messages and graphics;
- creating content about furniture safety or using content supplied in our toolkit;
- using #FurnitureSafetyWeek in posts before and during the week; and,
- creating events centered around home and furniture safety, such as hosting a local child-proofing expert to demonstrate furniture and television anchoring in a retail store.
