50 top furniture retailers tackle industry challenges at HFA’s CEO Summit

The Home Furnishings Association today convened its inaugural CEO Summit in Pebble Beach, Calif. The three-day event brings together owners, presidents and chief executives of 50 of the Top 100 home furnishings retailers for discussions about significant industry issues. The setting is an iconic golf resort on the Pacific coast, but the agenda is focused on business. Participants will share ideas about best responses to international trade challenges, eCommerce and other industry disruptions. The goal is to generate knowledge, and potential actions, that can be shared throughout the HFA membership. The topics addressed at the summit “will have ripple effects

Qualman: Build those personal relationships in a digital world

Social media is like a digital superhero for furniture retailers, a powerful tool to connect and share your brand with consumers. But with that power comes great responsibility, says author and digital influencer Erik Qualman. What does it take to be a successful furniture retailer in the digital era? Part of the formula is understanding when using technology is effective, and when to hold back, says Qualman, who brought his high-energy sermon to about 250 retailers at last week’s High Point Market. “Digital leaders know there’s a balance that needs to be struck between online and offline,” said Qualman, the

Exclusive Furniture remembers a fallen sheriff’s deputy

Like many people in Houston, the nation and the world, Home Furnishings Association member Sam Zavary of Exclusive Furniture was stunned to hear of the fatal shooting of a Harris County sheriff’s deputy last month. Zavary met Sandeep Dhaliwal, a 10-year veteran of law enforcement, on many occasions. Dhaliwal was shot multiple times by one of two people in a stopped car during a traffic stop, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez. Dhaliwal was one of the first sheriff’s deputies in the country to wear a traditional Sikh turban on duty. Zavary decided to show his support for Dhaliwal

Howell Furniture steps up for Beaumont

For days on end, Howell Furniture’s Facebook feed ran a string of public service announcements. Again. Tropical Storm Imelda poured 43 inches of rain onto Beaumont and other communities in Southeast Texas last month, triggering floods that nearly matched the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey in August 2017. Howell co-owner Shawn Hanley kept the Beaumont-based company’s social media channels updated with encouragement and information. Where could residents find food, water, and other supplies? Where could they launder their dirty clothes? What should they do with soaked furnishings? How could they report their losses? Whom could they trust to make repairs?

Furniture retailers must get delivery right, Cory says

A sale isn’t final, and it doesn’t satisfy the customer, until it’s delivered into her home, Patrick Cory said in a Home Furnishings Association seminar at High Point Market Oct. 21. Cory was co-owner of Cory 1st Choice Home Delivery until its acquisition by J.B. Hunt Transport Services earlier this year. He holds a consulting role with J.B. Hunt. Speaking in the HFA’s Resource Center, Cory stressed how easily a customer experience can turn sour at the final step by telling an anecdote about a former associate’s furniture purchase. The husband thought the delivery crew did everything right. His wife’s

City Furniture offers a night of soccer, countless nights of sleep

Some underprivileged youngsters got more than a soccer match when they showed up at Exploria Stadium in Orlando this month. Home Furnishings Association member City Furniture teamed up with Orlando City Soccer Club to surprise the children with new twin-size beds and bedding at the first-ever Delivering Hope Pajama Party on Oct. 4. “This was a great launch for the Delivering Hope program, bringing the kids an evening to remember at Exploria Stadium and the ongoing health benefits of supportive, restful sleep,” said City Furniture President Andrew Koenig. “As our partnership with Orlando City Soccer Club continues growing, the Delivering
