HFA member Walker Furniture helps firefighters with a good night’s sleep

Two years ago, Home Furnishings Association member Walker Furniture pledged to replace the mattresses at all 30 Clark County firehouses in the Las Vegas Valley as part of an ongoing event called “Project Firehouse: Rested & Ready.” On June 12, employees from Walker Furniture delivered six new mattresses, foundations and protectors to a firehouse on East Desert Inn Road near the city’s famous neon strip. Linda Alterwitz-Mizrahi, co-owner of Walker Furniture, makes it a point of attending every delivery to the county’s firehouses — no matter how small or far away the station is. Their home away from home “Every delivery is special,” said

Synchrony Financing helps you convert lookers into customers

‘Our secret weapon’ If you ask Home Furnishings Association members about Synchrony’s competitive financing rates, they’ll tell you how Synchrony differentiates their stores from their competitors, helps drive repeat business, closes more sales and instills customer loyalty. This time of year, HFA member Damon Peterson offers another reason why he’s a fan of the financing program: quarterly rebates have been announced. “The rebates alone pay for my association membership,” says Peterson, owner of Royal Star Furniture in South Saint Paul, Minn. “For me, it’s the best benefit by far the association offers me because it pays for itself every year.”

Massachusetts delays paid leave program

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker (above) and legislative leaders agreed June 11 to delay for three months the implementation of a payroll tax to fund a paid family and medical leave program for private-sector workers. The payroll tax of 0.63 percent was set to take effect July 1, but the Republican governor and Democratic Speaker Robert DeLeo and Senate President Karen Spilka agreed that more time is needed. “To ensure businesses have adequate time to implement the state’s Paid Family and Medical Leave program, the House, Senate and Administration have agreed to adopt a three-month delay to the start of required

Is your store ready for AR?

Whether they are shopping for sandals or sofas, consumers have no shortage of augmented reality (AR) apps to assist them these days. Following the viral success of Pokémon Go in 2016, hordes of retailers have embraced the technology, including furniture retailers. Home Furnishings Association member Jerome’s Furniture recently deployed its Photo to Floorplan technology powered by Marxent 3D Room Designer. Using the program on Jerome’s website, shoppers can design whole rooms from photos, buy the pieces they like and share the results with family and friends. But AR’s promise doesn’t make it a great investment for every furniture retailer. The likes of virtual

No new taxes, or tariffs!

The Home Furnishings Association has joined 660 other U.S. businesses and trade associations asking President Donald Trump not to impose new taxes on products imported from China. “We know firsthand that the additional tariffs will have a significant, negative, and long-term impact on American businesses, farmers, families, and the U.S. economy,” the letter to the president, sent June 13, said. “Broadly applied tariffs are not an effective tool to change China’s unfair trade practices. Tariffs are taxes paid directly by U.S. companies, including those listed below — not China.” The letter was sent by Tariffs Hurt the Heartland, an umbrella organization of
