HFA member HOM Furniture is expanding its Midwest footprint with the purchase of the former Younkers Department Store in Wausau Center Mall, in Wausau, Wis.
The store, which has been vacant since Younkers closed in April, will be gutted and refurbished to accommodate furniture sales. When completed, the 110,000-square-foot renovated building will provide a wide selection of furniture, as well as all HOM’s specialty brands including World Rugs, Bargain Shop, Seasonal Concepts Patio and Sleep Express. There will also be HOM’s famous The Cookie Shop, which provides customers a place to take a break while shopping.

HOM president and CEO Rodney Johansen said the company has been looking at the Wausau market for a long time. When Younkers announced in January it was closing, HOM moved in. Johansen said his company’s patience “will be well worth the time we spent to secure the appropriate space. Wausau Center Mall is a perfect location well within our distribution network and will allow HOM Furniture to offer our industry-leading product assortments with all of our fine brands, exciting products and custom design solutions for years to come.”
The new location is the next step in the continued expansion of the HOM Furniture brand and will be the 17th HOM Furniture location. HOM has stores in Minnesota, South Dakota, North Dakota, Iowa and Wisconsin. Johansen said HOM expects to open its Wausau store sometime during the second quarter of 2019.
