Dover honors HFA member Ross Furniture with Business of the Year Award
If you know Home Furnishings Association member Jason Howard’s self-deprecating humor, you’ll understand his reaction when he learned this month that Ross Furniture was named the 2019 Business of the Year by the Greater Dover (N.H.) Chamber of Commerce.
“Well, I guess we finally did something right,” joked Howard. “Whatever it is, we probably should keep doing it.”
The landmark downtown company was opened by Ross Payeur in 1942. Today, Howard and his wife Tina run the show. Jason Howard started working there in the spring of 1973. He was responsible for sweeping the sidewalk out front and dusting the furniture inside. Jason Howard jokes that he still sweeps the sidewalk.
Tina Howard said they are honored to accept the award, which will come in a formal presentation next month. “It’s very humbling because you just don’t think about it day to day,” she said. “We’re overwhelmed, in a good way.”
Jason Howard said the award is a testimony to the store’s resilience through good times and bad. “I mean people really like the service we provide them,” he said. It’s not always about price. “I’ve had people buy from us knowing they could find it cheaper elsewhere but they like the service we offer. That means a lot to me.”
