HFA Announces 2017 Retailer of the Year Winners

Hudson Brothers accepting award

The Home Furnishings Association (HFA) is proud to announce the winners of its 2017 Retailer of the Year awards, which celebrates retailers who exhibit exceptional examples of philanthropy, technology, customer experience, mentoring, sustainability and store design/merchandising.

Father and son duo, David and Brad Schweig, of Sunnyland Outdoor Furniture in Dallas are the HFA Retailers of the Year in the category of businesses with a sales volume under $10 million. Sunnyland is the first casual furniture retailer to win HFA’s Retailer of the Year award. This 47-year-old company is the largest outdoor and patio casual furniture store in Texas with a 37,000-square-foot showroom, clearance center and on-site distribution center. David prides himself on working in an industry “whose primary purpose is to improve the quality of life of customers by providing them with comfort and relaxation.”

Joshua Hudson, CEO of Hudson’s Furniture, a family-owned business founded in 1981 is the HFA Retailer of the Year in the category of businesses with a sales volume of more than $10 million. Hudson’s operates 14 Hudson’s Furniture showrooms and three outlet centers and offers promotional to high end furniture to its Central Florida customers. Joshua says he’s in the furniture business because “I have a genuine love for teaching others and a strong desire to build on my family business legacy.”

David and Brad Schweig and Joshua Hudson will receive their awards and be celebrated at the 2017 Home Furnishings Association’s Retailer of the Year awards event, June 5 at the annual Home Furnishings Networking Conference in San Antonio. The HFA is also excited to announce the winners of its newest awards— the Emerging Star and Trailblazer awards, which recognize retailers who’ve successfully jumped into the industry with both feet and those who’ve made a career of forging new roads, respectively.

Cynthia Heathcoe, owner of Contemporary Living in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. is this year’s Emerging Star and Jake Jabs, founder of American Furniture Warehouse in Englewood, Colo. is the Trailblazer. Cynthia and Jake will be recognized during the Retailer of the Year celebration at the HFA Networking Conference in June as well.

“Congratulations to David, Brad, Josh, Cynthia and Jake,” said Sharron Bradley, HFA’s CEO. “I think our winners this year accurately represent the variety and diversity of home furnishings retailers across the country; they’re a true glimpse into what it takes to be successful in today’s economy. Each of these HFA members strives to give their customers a remarkable shopping experience, work with the best employees, give back to their communities and be active, thoughtful members of their industry. We’re happy to celebrate their accomplishments.”
