By now you’ve probably seen the viral video of a bedroom dresser falling on a two-year-old boy in Utah and his twin brother trying to push it off him. HFA member Joey Gunn, a father of three-year-old twin boys himself, remembers watching the video and thinking, “what if that were my children?”
So Gunn grabbed a camera and went to work. He plucked a salesman, Victor Peraza off the sales floor of his store, Knight Furniture in Sherman, Texas, and, within minutes, had created his own viral video of sorts on their Facebook page. In less than a month more than 5,000 people have viewed the video on Knight Furniture’s Facebook page, making it one of the store’s most-watched videos.
Safety standards that make dressers more stable are currently voluntary, but some lawmakers are pushing for federal legislation to make those standards mandatory.
Gunn says Knight’s delivery drivers will install anchors in a customer’s home to secure furniture but sometimes customers take the furniture home themselves. “We can’t always control what happens when the furniture leaves our store, but we can teach people what needs to be done,” says Gunn. “That’s just as important to me.”
