Online retailers must pay local sales taxes in California, too

Online retailers that sell to California customers must collect sales taxes beginning April 1 – and not only for the state. They also must collect and remit sales taxes for individual districts in which their total annual sales exceed $100,000 or separate transactions number 200 or more. California will begin requiring these sales-tax collections in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2018 South Dakota v. Wayfair decision. Ashley’s Angels deliver at Christmas

Ashley’s Angels brought Christmas cheer to 1,220 children in four states during the recent holidays. The nonprofit organization Ashley’s Angels and employees of HFA member Ashley Furniture Industries raised nearly $300,000 in 2018 to provide food, clothing and toys for children in areas surrounding the company’s manufacturing and distribution facilities in Mississippi, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Since Ashley’s Angels was founded in 1997, it has contributed more than $3 million worth of Christmas gifts to children in need.

Ashley opens 900th HomeStore

The Ashley HomeStore brand has reached the farthest corners of the earth with five openings in New Zealand Nov. 30, the Home Furnishings Association member announced. The store in Ahuriri Napier is Ashley’s 900th. Four other HomeStores opened on the same day in Palmerston North, Paraparaumu, Lower Hutt and Hamilton. The five towns are all on New Zealand’s North Island between the larger cities of Wellington and Auckland. Millennials account for a greater share of furniture spending

Millennials – Americans 22 to 37 years old – are increasing their share of consumer spending. They aren’t neglecting furniture and bedding, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. BLS reports in its newest Consumer Expenditure Survey that from 2014 to 2017, Millennials increased their share of overall furniture and bedding purchasing from 20.1 percent to 24.6 percent. At the same time, the share for Baby Boomers – 54 to 72 years old — declined from 37.6 percent to 34.3 percent. Can-do spirit: Art Van helps donate more than 7 tons of canned food

For the 10th consecutive year, metro Detroiters demonstrated their can-do spirit, donating 15,085 pounds of non-perishable food items as part of Home Furnishings Association (HFA) member Art Van Furniture’s “Together We Can” food drive. This year’s campaign benefited Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan.
