Mattress and furniture retailers in California and Rhode Island should prepare for upcoming adjustments to the mattress recycling fee, scheduled for early 2026. These changes, announced by the Mattress Recycling Council (MRC), reflect rising labor, transportation, and operational costs associated with responsible mattress disposal and recycling programs.
California Fee Increase – Effective April 1, 2026
Beginning April 1, 2026, the mattress recycling fee in California will increase from $16.00 to $18.00 per unit. This applies to all mattresses, futons, and foundations sold in the state of California.
To support retailers in communicating this update to customers, Mattress Recycling Council will distribute updated educational materials in March 2026. These resources will also be available for download in the Resources Library on MattressRecyclingCouncil.org. Retailers are encouraged to review these materials and ensure staff are prepared to explain the upcoming change at the point of sale.
Rhode Island Fee Increase – Effective January 1, 2026
Starting January 1, 2026, Rhode Island’s mattress recycling fee will rise from $20.50 to $22.50 per unit for all mattresses and foundations sold within the state.
Updated customer education materials will be provided to registered retailers in December 2025 and will also be accessible through the Mattress Recycling Council Resources Library. These tools will help ensure clear communication with consumers ahead of the fee adjustment.
